Xiaomi YU7 EV preorders hit nearly 300,000 units within one hour

  • Xiaomi’s direct competitor to the world best-selling Tesla Model Y, the YU7, launched for preorder last week in China, and if preorder figures are anything to go by, it’s set to be a hit seller for the nascent EV brand.
  • Within an hour of preorders for the new EV opening, over 289,000 orders were placed, consisting of both refundable deposits and ‘lock-in’ non-refundable orders.
  • With prices starting from RMB 253,500 (equivalent to $35,400) in China, the YU7 will be a closely price-matched rival for the Tesla Model Y, which starts from RMB 263,500.

Is the Xiaomi YU7 primed to be an EV sales hit?

After preorders for the Xiaomi YU7 opened for Chinese customers last week, over 289,000 preorders were placed within an hour of the order books opening. For comparison, when its SU7 saloon opened for Chinese preorders back in 2024, 90,000 preorders were placed within a 24-hour period. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has previously stated that the firm expects demand for the YU7 to increase three-fold over its previous SU7. That can be put down to its impressive price point, performance, on-board technology, and also arguably its notable visual similarities to a much more expensive and unattainable car – the Ferrari Purosangue.

Will the Xiaomi YU7 come to Europe?

Whilst Xiaomi was originally launched as a smartphone manufacturer back in 2010, Xiaomi made its first foray into the automotive space with the all-electric SU7, which officially launched in late 2023. The YU7 is its second car (and EV) to be launched, in what is an impressively short timeframe.

The YU7 remains exclusive to the Chinese market for now, but we’re likely to see this electric SUV arrive in regions such as Europe in just a few years. The company plans to start selling EVs outside of China from 2027, with a European deadline of 2030 previously set by its CEO. Its recent plans to open a European R&D centre in the heartland of German car manufacturing further strengthens these future predictions of a European launch for Xiaomi’s EV division.
