- The upcoming Renault Twingo EV, set to compete with a whole new host of sub-€20k electric cars, will indeed make its way to the right-hand-drive UK market, Renault brand CEO Fabrice Cambolive has confirmed.
- With a target starting price below the €20,000 mark, we can expect the Twingo EV to hit the UK market anywhere below the £17,000 barrier.
- At this price, the Twingo will help further democratise EV ownership, as the cheap electric car market continues to widen.
The upcoming Twingo is set to reach the UK
Previously, Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo had said that a RHD variant of the upcoming Twingo would be dependent on Nissan producing a sibling model under the same platform. With Nissan now confirming that its similar model will go ahead, this has now allowed for the Twingo to become viable for Renault in right-hand-drive form. Cambolive also noted that the new Renault 5 has just become the best selling EV in terms of private sales in the UK, furthering the OEM’s confidence that the Twingo can replicate the 5’s success.
The model is still on track for a 2026 launch, as the production form of the Twingo is still yet to be revealed – with just a concept to go on for now. If the Renault 5’s prototype was anything to go by, however, the production Twingo should stay pretty true to its concept roots.
Exact pricing for the new Twingo hasn’t been confirmed, but Renault have confirmed that prices will start below €20,000 – equivalent to just a smidge under £17,000. At this cost, the Twingo will be entering an increasingly competitive sub-€20,000 EV market, and is likely to be priced near directly in line with Volkswagen’s upcoming cheapest EV, the ID. EVERY1. Wolfsburg’s budget EV won’t be arriving until 2027 however, a full year after the Renault. The imminent arrival of BYD’s Dolphin Surf (a rename of China’s BYD Seagull) to Europe will be another price contender for the Twingo.
The new Twingo won’t be the first time the model has seen electrification, as the previous Mark 3 Renault Twingo was briefly sold in fully-electric form between 2020 and 2024. However, this full EV version specifically never found its way to the UK market. This confirmation of a UK launch should also leave potential customers in other right-hand-drive nations, such as India and Japan, more hopeful for their own Twingo EV debut.
