Car of the Year awarded to an EV again, with Renault 5 taking the 2025 crown

  • The all-electric Renault 5 E-Tech, along with its performance-oriented cousin, the Alpine A290, have been jointly awarded the Car of the Year 2025 title.
  • It marks the fourth year in a row that a car with a fully-electric powertrain option has taken home the prestigious award.
  • Last year, the award also went to a Renault EV, specifically the Scenic E-Tech.

The award was judged by 60 motoring journalists across 23 countries, with the result announced at this month’s Brussels Motor Show. Jurors commended Renault’s EV for several reasons, including agile handling both in and outside the city, affordability – with prices starting at the €25,000 / £22,995 mark – and its attractive design.

It marks the fourth consecutive year that the award has gone to a car that is either solely available as an EV or available in fully-electric form. 2024’s award went to the Renault Scenic E-Tech, while in 2023 it went to the Jeep Avenger, and 2022 the Kia EV6.

The Renault 5 beat six of the final contenders, namely the Cupra Terramar, Dacia Duster, Alfa Romeo Junior, Citroen e-C3, Hyundai Inster, and Kia EV3. The latter four are exclusively EVs or available with fully-electric powertrains, once again highlighting the dominance of electric vehicles within this annual awards.

This EV is hitting more European markets, including the UK, this year.

Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of Renault Brand, commented:

“Within the Group, the Renault brand and Ampere, we all feel immensely proud to have taken the prestigious Car of the Year award for the second year running. Renault 5 E-Tech electric is a real game changer in Europe. It makes electric vehicles desirable as well as inspiring an emotional response. At the same time, it was designed to deliver added value for our customers. If there’s one car with the potential to transform the electric market, it’s this one.”
