Mazda Motor Corporation has announced its commitment to making Mazda factories globally carbon-neutral by 2035. This supports the brand’s goal of making the whole Mazda supply chain carbon neutral by 2050.
Mazda currently only has one electric vehicle (EV) in its lineup, the MX-30. It has announced a new range is on the way between 2022 and 2025 using its ‘SKYACTIV Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture’.
Mazda sees cleaner cars and production as the core responsibility of all automotive manufacturers to do their part in curbing global warming by reducing CO2 emissions.
This will be for every step of vehicle production, including manufacturing, transport, vehicle usage and recycling. This is good news and one that all automakers should be committing to as we move towards a more sustainable future for the motor industry.
Key Carbon Neutral Initiatives
As a result, Mazda has been actively engaged in several carbon neutral initiatives. To achieve carbon neutrality in Mazda factories around the globe by 2035, Mazda will continue to work closely with its partners and is focused on three areas.
These include energy conservation, a shift to renewable energies and the introduction of carbon-neutral fuels for in-house transportation.
Energy Conservation
Regarding energy conservation, Mazda plans to reduce the amount of thermal energy. This will be through the development of low-temperature curing paints and improvement of energy conversion efficiency by optimising processing technology.
Renewable Energy
Regarding the shift to renewable energy, Mazda recognises the importance of making steps toward the company’s carbon-neutrality. It will also contribute to the growth of the local economy where its factories are based.
Mazda will participate proactively in the efforts of the Carbon Neutral Electricity Promotion Subcommittee in the Chugoku region. This aims to expand the supply and demand of carbon-neutral electricity throughout the region.
Mazda are also considering various forms of decarbonisation. These include low/carbon-free power generation in its plants and procurement of electricity from renewable energy suppliers.
Carbon Neutral Fuels
For the introduction of carbon-neutral fuels, Mazda is working towards using carbon-neutral fuel for in-house transportation. This is in cooperation with the Hiroshima Council for Automotive Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration which is promoting the practical use of next-generation biofuels.
Mazda will also capitalise on the initiatives being conducted in Japan and use them as a basis to implement the optimal approach for each facility outside Japan.
Through these efforts, Mazda will continue to make steady steps toward the greater challenge of making its whole supply chain carbon neutral by 2050.
