First Bus takes a huge step towards an equitable EV transition by opening its rapid-charging bus depot to the public

First Bus has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative, marking a significant leap in the accessibility of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Situated in Summercourt, Cornwall, along the vital A30 corridor, this innovative project is a first for the UK’s bus industry.

This pioneering move by First Bus allows the general public direct access to rapid electric charging facilities for both vans and cars. Featuring eight rapid chargers, the newly established Summercourt charging hub operates on a ‘turn up and charge’ basis. At a rate of 69p per kilowatt-hour (kWh), users can enjoy charging rates of up to 150kW.

First Bus has allocated a substantial £1 million investment into this 12-month project. This provides the local community with essential charging infrastructure. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the Summercourt hub will remain a valuable resource for years to come.

Notably, this initiative extends beyond individual users. Local businesses are also encouraged to utilise the charging facilities. Drawing from successful models implemented in Glasgow and Leicester, companies like Open Reach, DPD, and Police Scotland can benefit from First Bus’s infrastructure, facilitating their transition to EV fleets.

Simon Goff, Managing Director of First Bus South, commented:

“Opening the Summercourt hub is a hugely exciting step forward in our decarbonisation journey. For local people, visitors and business, the new hub ensures EV drivers can charge their vehicles on a reliable connection at a fair price.”

With its strategic location and user-friendly approach, the Summercourt charging hub represents a tangible step toward a greener, more sustainable future for transportation in the UK. As electric vehicles continue to gain prominence, initiatives like this will play a crucial role. The need for accessible rapid-charging is more prevalent than ever. As heavy-duty infrastructure is rolled out around the world, opening these new stations could be a huge leap towards global adoption.
