- Volvo Buses introduces BZR Electric platform: A huge step in electric bus technology
- Adaptable design targets intercity and commuter operations globally
- Focus on safety and versatility sets new standards in emobility
The Volvo BZR Electric Platform is a breakthrough in modular electric bus technology
Volvo Buses has unveiled a new chapter in electric bus innovation with the Volvo BZR Electric platform. This latest development expands Volvo’s reach beyond city limits, targeting intercity and commuter operations worldwide.
The design draws from the success of its low-floor electric buses operating in 25 countries. Volvo Buses aims to meet the increasing demand for environmentally conscious transit solutions.
The BZR Electric platform boasts a flexible design. It is available in high-floor or low-entry models with two- or three-axle configurations. It features a modular energy storage system tailored to various operational requirements. The platform leverages the Volvo Group’s common e-mobility architecture for logistical efficiency and increased operator uptime.
Looking ahead, the BZR Electric is designed to evolve with future transportation needs. With potential applications in Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and coach services, Volvo Buses anticipates its adaptability to remain relevant amidst changing transit landscapes.
Technical specifications underscore the platform’s capabilities. It accommodates lengths from 9.5 to 15 meters and a maximum weight of 27,000 kg. With traction power reaching up to 400kW (or 540 hp) and a modular battery arrangement offering up to 540 kWh, the BZR Electric will advance both city and intercity operations.
Safety is a focal point in Volvo’s design ethos. The BZR Electric comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of active safety systems. It surpasses regulatory standards and prioritises the protection of vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
Anna Westerberg, President of Volvo Buses, commented:
“Electromobility is still a growing, fast-moving business, and at Volvo Buses we have gathered more than a decade of first-hand experience, together with customers and partners. With the launch of the Volvo BZR Electric, we’re convinced that we now have a product and a complete offer that will be a long-term solution for customers worldwide.”
Volvo Buses’ introduction of the BZR Electric platform is a significant stride towards wide-reaching electric bus solutions. With its versatile design, forward-thinking features, and commitment to safety, the platform sets a new benchmark for the future of emobility in bus transit. The electric bus sector is expanding rapidly. SWARCO has just unveiled a cutting-edge electric bus charging hub. Meanwhile, bus companies worldwide expand their operations off the back of fleet sale successes. This platform introduces a new technological advancement that will propel the sector to new heights.
