Volkswagen ID. Polo revealed, starting at under €25,000

Volkswagen takes the wraps off its long awaited ID. Polo. Is this one of the most important electric cars of the year?

Volkswagen has revealed the ID. Polo in full, a sub €25,000 electric car, with pre-sale orders starting now in Germany. The Polo has traditionally been one of Volkswagen’s best-selling models, so this next-generation fully-electric car is set to be one of the most important electric cars to be released this year.

We’ve already seen some pre-production photos of the ID. Polo last year, but with this new reveal, we now have more information on how the electric Polo will look and perform.

The ID. Polo operates on Volkswagen Group’s new MEB+ EV platform, bringing new levels of efficiency to the table – and we’ll also see this platform support upcoming EVs such as the Skoda Epiq and Volkswagen ID. Cross.

Three power outputs will be available at launch, with the offer of 114 horsepower, 133 horsepower, or an impressive 208 horsepower. It’s not confirmed yet, but that final 208 horsepower option could be designated to a sportier ID. Polo GTI model – as Volkswagen has previously signalled its intent to bring the legendary GTI badge into the EV era.

Two battery options will be available, either a 37 kWh LFP pack or a 52 kWh NMC pack. The latter will offer a maximum range of 454 kilometers (282 miles). Thanks to the space savings associated with an EV platform, the ID. Polo also offers significantly more room on the inside compared to the combustion Polo, with a rear boot size of 441 litres compared to 351 litres.

The price for the base ID. Polo will start at €24,995, putting it in line with other small electric hatchbacks such as the Kia EV2.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, commented on the new model:

“The ID. Polo brings a Volkswagen bestseller into the electric age. For decades, the Polo has been part of people’s everyday lives. With the ID. Polo, we are making electric mobility accessible to many more people: with clear and timeless design, intuitive operation, strong quality and technologies from higher segments. A genuine Volkswagen just like our customers expect from us.”
