  • Volkswagen has snapped photos of a preproduction concept model of its ID. Cross, a small and affordable electric SUV set to hit the European market later this year.
  • Arriving in the autumn, the Volkswagen ID. Cross is expected to be priced from around €28,000 (£24,000), making it the cheapest electric SUV offered by Volkswagen so far.
  • Much like the new ID. Polo, the ID. Cross will be based on the latest MEB+ platform.

Volkswagen ID. Cross electric SUV to arrive later this year

From the new photos, we can see that the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Cross will inherit much of the design language also seen in the upcoming ID. Polo. Its shape and €28,000 target price suggests it will be a strong competitor to a growing roster of small affordable electric SUVs and crossovers, such as the Vauxhall/Opel Frontera Electric and the Citroen e-C3 Aircross.

Within the wider Volkswagen Group, the Skoda Epiq (also being fully revealed later this year) is closely related, and will likely be priced even cheaper than the ID. Cross – with Skoda previously claiming a starting price below the €25,000 / £25,000 mark.

Volkswagen haven’t released too many details on the ID. Cross just yet, but we do now have some information on technical specs. Two battery capacities will be available – the cheapest being a 37 kWh unit, with the option to upgrade to a longer range 52 kWh unit. Varying power levels of 113 horsepower, 132 horsepower, or 207 horsepower will be on offer. That last significantly more powerful option could suggest that a ‘GTI’ variant of the ID. Cross is on the cards.

With this new ID. Cross and the ID. Polo both arriving this year, Volkswagen is on the verge of launching a roster of much more affordable electric cars. In 2027, even more affordable models will be on the way, such as the €20,000 ID. EVERY1. In light of this, Volkswagen expects rising EV sales over the next two years, as electric models become accessible to an even wider audience.
