Vauxhall and Opel reveal their fastest EV yet: The Mokka GSE

  • The freshly-revealed Mokka GSE is set to be the fastest fully-electric road car sold by Stellantis’ Vauxhall and Opel brands, inspired by the Mokka GSE Rally prototype.
  • With 280 horsepower on tap, the Mokka GSE packs a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds, combined with numerous improvements to the steering, suspension, and chassis.
  • The Mokka GSE joins an increasing number of fully-electric cars with a performance twist sold under the Stellantis umbrella, such as the Peugeot e‑208 GTi.

The fastest fully-electric Vauxhall yet

When it comes to the battery and motor setup, the Mokka GSE looks to use a similar setup to the recently-revealed Peugeot e-208 GTi hatchback. Power stands at 280 horsepower, along with 345 Nm of torque. This sub-six second 0-62mph time, along with a top speed of 124mph, will make it the fastest EV sold by both Vauxhall and Opel.

The Mokka GSE goes beyond simply being a standard Mokka EV with a bit of extra power. Sitting on lower and stiffer suspension, along with four-piston front brakes and a limited slip differential, the Mokka GSE has the potential to be a true electric performance car. Special attention has also been paid to the tyres, with the manufacturer opting for a set of Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres – an evolution of Michelin’s grippy road tyre, designed to meet the particular requirements of EVs. All high-voltage components of the Mokka GSE, such as the motor, inventer, battery, and wiring harness, come directly from the Mokka GSE Rally, which is already set to be used in real motorsport championships.

Other changes over the standard Mokka EV include a number of exterior aero tweaks, Alcantara sports seats, and new infotainment menus which show performance data such as G-force levels.

Steve Catlin, Managing Director at Vauxhall, commented:

“The new Mokka GSE brings motorsport energy to the streets. Using years of pioneering electric motorsport experience, we have put our best engineering, power, and handling into a car made for daily thrills. With its striking design, sharp handling, and outstanding performance, the Mokka GSE is made to be exciting to drive and builds on a proud heritage of sporting Vauxhalls for the modern electric era. We can’t wait to see the car in the hands of our car-loving community soon.”

Catlin’s statement suggests that more performance-oriented EVs sold under the Vauxhall and Opel brands could be on the horizon, allowing the manufacturers to tap in to an increasingly competitive performance EV market. Considering that the e-208 GTi runs on the same basic platform as the Corsa-e, Vauxhall and Opel’s small electric hatchback is ripe for a GSE makeover. Such a model would mark the return of the hot Corsa, after the petrol-powered Corsa VXR/OPC was discontinued back in 2018.
