The classic Citroën 2CV is back for the electric era by 2027
The legendary Citroën 2CV is making a comeback—as an electric vehicle. Citroën’s CEO, Thierry Koskas, has hinted that the beloved classic will return by 2027. These pictures are artists impressions, rendered by Dejan Hristov.

The original 2CV was infamous for its simplicity, comfort, and affordability. Citroën plans to keep these qualities while adding an electric powertrain. In doing so, they’re bringing back another classic to the modern era, retaining its credentials as a car for everyone, made for the modern era.
This move comes as Citroën continues its push for affordable electric cars. The company recently launched the e-C3, a compact EV priced at just £21,990. It has accumulated praise for making emobility more accessible, culminating in double accolades last July. As high EV prices remain a barrier for many drivers, Citroën is proving that electric cars don’t have to be expensive.
The electric 2CV will likely follow this approach
Industry experts predict it will be priced under £20,000, making it one of the most affordable EVs on the market. This would put it in direct competition with Renault’s new electric 5, which has generated massive buzz with its £22,995 price tag.

The 5 E-Tech’s similar retro-inspired, low-cost approach is proving that there’s a huge demand for these well designed and affordable models. Now, Citroën hopes to do the same with the 2CV.
Citroën designed the original 2CV for tough roads and everyday use. Over nine million were sold between 1948 and 1990, cementing its place in automotive history.
Koskas believes the 2CV’s global recognition gives it a unique advantage. “You can go anywhere—even to Brazil—and people will know the 2CV,” he said.
With Renault proving the demand for budget-friendly, retro-inspired EVs, Citroën’s electric 2CV looks like the next big hit. If all goes to plan, fans of the classic car could see a modern, all-electric version on the road in just a few years.
