SEAT and CUPRA lay out electrification plans for 2025 and 2026

  • Volkswagen Group subsidiary, SEAT, has confirmed its electrification plans across 2025 and 2026, including commencing full-scale production of a new electric vehicle next year, encouragement of EV usage amongst employees, and a tripling in the number of charge points surrounding its Martorell factory in Spain.
  • The moves also hope to turn Spain into ‘hub for electric vehicles’ within Europe.
  • The strategy will be crucial for SEAT and CUPRA, particularly with CUPRA set to go fully-electric by 2030 – the same date by which the SEAT badge will also be fully phased out for CUPRA on all future passenger cars.

SEAT and CUPRA outlines electrification strategy

The biggest news from SEAT’s announcement is the confirmation of the near arrival of the CUPRA Raval, which will be the manufacturer’s most compact fully-electric car yet, slotting below the Volkswagen ID.3-based CUPRA Born. The Raval is set to be built at SEAT’s Spanish Martorell facility, with the finishing of the production line and pre-series production of the model set to take place this year. Then, in 2026, full-scale production will commence, for both the CUPRA Raval and the Volkswagen ID.2, which both share Volkswagen Group’s new ‘Electric Urban Car’ platform. This duo will be Volkswagen Group’s answer to increasingly affordable electric options like the Renault 5.

To remain on track for SEAT and CUPRA’s 2030 all-electric goal, the firm is also promoting electrified vehicle use to all employees, exploring ways to allow all employees to experience an EV – making them ‘electric ambassadors’ for the brand. SEAT notes that all 450 of those within its management team already drive electrified vehicles.

Further adding to these electrification plans, CUPRA last year outlined ambitions to sell EVs in the U.S. by 2030, which would mark the first arrival of the CUPRA brand into North America.

Wayne Griffiths, CUPRA and SEAT’s CEO, commented on the plans:

“At SEAT S.A., we lead by example. In 2025, we will continue advancing our electrification journey while striving to make Spain a hub for electromobility alongside the Volkswagen Group. We want SEAT S.A.’s people to be the first drivers of change. We are encouraging the use of electrified vehicles among employees and strengthening our charging network. We are firmly committed but we also need support from the administrations, with concrete measures to accelerate this transformation nationwide.”

SEAT and CUPRA are not the only premium brands hoping to go fully-electrified in the near future. Genesis Motor has set an even more ambitious goal in Europe, with all models sold set to be electrified as either fully-electric or hybrid drivetrains by the end of the year.
