Nissan Micra EV revealed: A cheap electric car for the masses

  • Nissan has revealed the Micra EV, marking the first time that the manufacturer’s forty-year-old city car model has gone fully-electric.
  • With prices likely to start below the £25,000 mark, the Micra will be notable as one of the best value electric cars on the market.
  • The Micra EV is part of Nissan’s rapid electric model expansion plans, with the manufacturer hoping to sell 19 fully-electric models worldwide by 2030.

The new Micra EV has been unveiled

As part of the ongoing alliance between Nissan and Renault Group, the Micra EV is actually based on the same underpinnings as Renault’s electric city car, the Renault 5, with both models being based on the AmpR Small platform. Much like the 5, this new Micra looks like it could also be a design hit, whilst still looking different enough from its French cousin for consumers to tell them apart.

Much like the Renault 5, the Micra EV will have two choices of battery pack capacity: 40 kWh and 52 kWh, with the latter offering up a maximum range of 253 miles. Power on the higher capacity option stands at 147 horsepower, which if the Renault 5 is anything to go by, should be enough to deliver 0-60mph in a spritely 7.6 seconds. It remains to be seen if Nissan later reveals a NISMO performance variant, much like the Renault 5’s hotted up twin, the Alpine A290.

Pricing for the sixth-generation Micra was not revealed at the launch, but we can expect it to be priced at-least in line with the Renault 5’s £26,995 starting price, if not lower, with sales starting in Europe later this year. In the future, however, the Micra won’t be the cheapest EV sold by Nissan in Europe. Nissan is set to produce a sibling model to Renault’s upcoming Twingo EV, with prices for both expected to start below £17,000.

Other fully-electric models on the horizon for Nissan in Europe include the third-generation Nissan Leaf, as well as the first all-electric iteration of its Juke.

Giovanny Arroba, Vice President of Nissan Design Europe, commented:

“In designing the sixth generation of the MICRA, we’ve celebrated all the values that have historically made it so popular – and opened a new chapter for MICRA as an EV. The exterior has an audacious and playful appearance on first look but has a stance which gives it a solid presence on the road. We’ve also been able to integrate delightful details into the design, which owners will love. We’re proud to have been able to bring the MICRA into the EV age.”
