- EV charging specialist Voltempo has begun series production of its ‘HyperCharger’, a British-built megawatt-capable charging unit that will be capable of charging speeds up to 1,000kW.
- The charger will help support the rapid recharging of electric trucks equipped with MCS charge ports, further enabling long-distance eHGV travel as more logistics fleets consider making the switch.
- The production of the HyperCharger will take place at Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham, an innovation zone which brings together businesses helping to drive clean energy forward in the region.
British-build Megawatt charger begins series production
The Voltempo HyperCharger has been purpose built for electric HGVs, with the ability to deliver over 1MW of distributed power to up to six electric trucks simultaneously. Through the government-backed eFREIGHT 2030 project, seven fleets are already set to deploy HyperCharger units, while two publicly-accessible HGV charging hubs will also open with HyperChargers.
Electric HGVs have already proven to be reliable workhorses for businesses, as evidenced by the significant distances already covered by customers and their use in time-critical logistics operations such as Formula 1. However, even with battery ranges improving, firms with uncertain schedules or long transportation distances are still hesitant to make the switch. Megawatt charging systems, such as that offered by Voltempo, will be crucial for enabling these customers to feel more confident about electric HGVs.
Michael Boxwell, CEO of Voltempo, commented:
“Starting series production of the HyperCharger is a defining moment – not just for Voltempo, but for the UK’s journey towards zero-emission freight. Our technology has been designed from day one to meet the real-world needs of logistics operators, and we’re proud to be creating green jobs and driving innovation right here in Birmingham.”
Sir Vince Cable, Former Leader of the Liberal Democrats and Chair of the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium, added:
“I’m delighted to officially open Voltempo’s new facility and mark the start of series production for the HyperCharger. This is a major step forward – not just for Voltempo, but for the UK’s transition to zero-emission road freight. The HyperCharger is central to the success of the eFREIGHT 2030 programme and demonstrates how British innovation can create skilled jobs, attract investment, and build the infrastructure we need to compete in the global clean transport economy.”
