Next generation MG4 revealed, as MG targets global market

  • Following in the footsteps of the current electric MG4 hatchback, which has been on sale in markets around the globe since 2022, MG is primed to launch an all-new generation of its compact electric car.
  • The China-based reveal comes as the electric hatchback car segment grows rapidly, with other reveals in recent months including models from other manufacturers such as the hatchback-based Kia EV4.
  • As well as a fresh design and increased space, the new MG4 is also lighter on its feet than its predecessor – which could bring new levels of range efficiency to the electric hatchback market.

Next generation MG4 EV revealed

While this visual reveal took place under MG’s Chinese division, this model is pinned to be a global release, so expect to also see the new MG4 on its way to regions such as Europe in the very near future.

The photos published uncover a much more conventional hatchback design than the outgoing MG4. Some slight design references to MG’s flagship electric sports car, the Cyberster, are seen in the rear taillights. Overall, these design changes which make it look significantly classier than its predecessor should help it better compete with both Chinese rivals, such as the BYD Dolphin, but also European rivals like the Volkswagen ID.3, which has previously been seen as a direct rival to the MG4.

A visual reveal isn’t all we know about the upcoming MG4, with data published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) divulging more on the technical side of the new EV. According to these documents, the new MG4 will weigh in at 1,485kg – an impressive reduction on the previous model’s weight of 1,641kg. Battery capacity for the new model, however, is yet to be revealed. For now, it indicates that the MG4 will launch with a 160 horsepower electric motor. It remains to be seen whether MG will bring back the sports car-rivalling ‘XPOWER’ performance marque for the new model.
