Kia EV4 previewed as electric hatch and saloon duo

  • Ahead of Kia’s ‘EV Day’ on Thursday 27th February, the company has revealed the first photos of its upcoming Kia EV4 electric car – which has previously only been seen in concept form.
  • Arriving in two separate body styles, Kia is clearly aiming for the EV4 to take a significant proportion of the electric car market. The hatchback-based EV4 will compete with models like the Volkswagen ID.3 and BYD Dolphin, whilst the saloon-based EV4 will provide an alternative to roomier EVs like the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2.
  • While it’s just photos for now, more details on Kia EV4 specifications are expected to be disclosed in the coming weeks.

Kia readies up for another EV model launch – with best selling rivals in its sights

The option of both hatchback and saloon body types, and Kia’s note that the new model will target a ‘broad demographic’ suggests the EV4 will be a global model for Kia – so it’s likely we’ll see the EV4 to make its way over to regions like North America. It remains to be seen which regions will receive the hatch shape, saloon shape, or both.

In hatchback form, the EV4 is likely to be priced in line with electric cars such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and BYD Dolphin. The design of the EV4 is certainly more radical than these two existing options, which could be seen as a plus to potential buyers. This segment position means the EV4 hatch is likely to be priced below the £35,000 mark, at a minimum.

It remains to be seen what premium, if anything, the saloon EV4 would command over its hatchback sibling. However, considering the EV4 will already likely be price matched with models like the ID.3, the saloon has the potential to undercut cars like the Tesla Model 3 on price, while still offering a similar amount of cabin space – which could make it a sales hit against models such as that. The saloon takes on a ‘long-tail’ shape, a particularly aerodynamic shape for a car. This could also make the saloon a potential class leader when it comes to drivable range – Kia’s most recent EV3 can already crack 375 miles of range, in long-range 81.4kWh form. This battery pack could find its way into the long-range variant of the EV4.

Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design, commented on the reveal:

“The Kia EV4 is a clear reflection of our commitment to rethink mobility, and expand the boundaries of what design can achieve. By offering both saloon and hatchback variants, we are bringing to our customers, the unique experience of modernity and practicality that defines the Kia EV family, in a way that suits their varied lifestyles and needs. Offering a fresh take on the saloon, the EV4 saloon features a sleek, low nose and long-tail silhouette. The EV4 hatchback is a nimble, versatile all-rounder. Distinctive and clean, it is built to excel in any situation.”
