- MG has revealed the latest addition to its BEV lineup, with the introduction of the MGS5.
- Taking over from the outgoing MG ZS EV, this new model will be available in the UK from April, with a wider European launch coming later in the second quarter of the year.
- With an entry price of £28,945, the MGS5 will exist in a range of sub-£30k electric SUVs, while undercutting models like the Volvo EX30 and Skoda Elroq on price.
MGS5 arriving in the UK next month
Despite its relatively low starting price, MG is hoping for the MGS5 to be attractive to customers from a premium perspective, and that’s reflected in both the exterior and interior design, while building on the competency of its existing MG4 electric hatchback. Much like the upcoming refreshed MG4, MG says its new SUV has drawn design inspiration from its radical Cyberster electric sports car.
The MGS5 will be offered in three variants, including the SE Standard Range (£28,459), SE Long Range (£30,995), and Trophy Long Range (£33,495). The latter two offer pack a larger 64kWh battery pack, offering a driving range between 288 and 298 miles.
Even in top specification, the MGS5 manages to closely match the starting prices of EVs like the Volvo EX30 and Skoda Elroq, whilst offering a higher drivable range than both and a high level of standard equipment. For those looking for the most affordable electric SUV, however, options like the Vauxhall Grandland Electric and Citroen e-C3 Aircross still have the MGS5 beat – albeit in a smaller body size.

The news of yet another sub-£30k EV hitting the market is yet more proof that EVs are achieving price parity with their petrol and diesel-powered counterparts, helping to drive early mainstream EV adoption in the run up to 2030.
David Allison, Head of Product and Planning for MG Motor UK, commented on the launch:
“MGS5 EV is an advanced, enjoyable and refined EV. MG’s advanced and dedicated EV platform has been further enhanced to create a truly spacious, practical and elegant cabin experience for this all-new MG SUV. Meanwhile, the technology offering surges ahead with the introduction of iSmart and MG Pilot Custom, an attractive dual screen layout, five drive modes, Five-Link rear suspension and a bespoke EV braking system created in partnership with Continental.
The rear wheel drive MGS5 EV features highly responsive and engaging driving characteristics, seamlessly combining sportiness with excellent range as well as rapid charging and a choice of two batteries. It is our most compelling and complete EV so far, performing strongly in every arena.”
