- SAIC’s MG brand will launch a solid-state battery-based EV, with a release set for the second quarter of 2025.
- The batteries will debut on a premium MG EV, and whilst this model hasn’t yet been specified, indicators point to the MG Cyber GTS.
- If the 2025 launch date is reached, it would be among one of the first manufacturers to release a mass-market solid-state battery EV, following another SAIC subsidiary, IM Motors.
MG enters the solid state game ahead of its competitors
The release was announced by SAIC‘s Executive Vice President of Passenger Vehicles, Yu Jingmin, noting that the solid state battery tech would initially make its way into a selected MG model next year, before being rolled out across other EVs in SAIC’s portfolio. Whether the solid-state battery in question will be even more capable than the current semi-solid-state pack fitted to SAIC’s IM Motors L6, which is capable of travelling around 1000 km / 621 miles on a single charge, or simply be a similar unit, remains to be seen.
Which EV specifically this solid-state battery will initially be fitted to is yet to be confirmed. However, the current higher price of such solutions means it’s likely to be fitted to a premium MG model, which could end up being the Cyber GTS – which has had no technical details revealed yet, after its concept was revealed at Goodwood earlier this year.
The release would put MG at a significant advantage over the competition, with Samsung SDI not planning to mass produce its own solid-state batteries until 2027. It would also mean that MG beats both Toyota and Nissan to release, with the two manufacturers not expected to release solid-state EVs until 2027 and 2028 respectively.
