- The Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+, which is already one of the longest range electric cars on the market, has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance travelled in an electric vehicle on a single charge.
- Carried out over two days by webCG across Japan, the EV beat the previous world record of 949 kilometres, with this new record managing 1,045 kilometres on a single charge.
- That compares to the EQS 450+’s official claimed range of 774 kilometres.
Mercedes-Benz EQS takes the record for the longest distance travelled on one charge
The feat was achieved by Japanese automotive site webCG, with the group noting that the achievement helps to communicate the value and potential of EVs far and wide. Perhaps more impressively, the achievement wasn’t only done in lower speed urban areas, where energy consumption remains lower – the 1,045 kilometre trip spanned the length of Japan, from Fukuoka to Tokyo. This takes into account rural and faster highways, whilst making use of the EQS’ regenerative braking across Japan’s hilly landscape.
The driver, Masamichi Ishii, put the credit mainly down to the EQS, noting that ‘anyone’ could do such an impressive range run, providing they have some idea about the balance between speed and efficiency. He put the record down to the EQS’ high levels of aerodynamics and impressive energy recuperation efficiency.
You can read the full write-up of webCG’s achievement on its site, here (with translation from Japanese available). With solid state battery-based EVs on the horizon, though, we can expect this record to be beat in the next couple of years, as claimed range from manufacturers gets even higher.
The achievement joins a growing list of EV-related world records. Recently, Verge Motorcycle’s fully-electric Verge TS Pro broke the record for the longest journey on a single charge of an electric motorbike, achieving 311 kilometres. Similarly, a Guinness World Record for the longest drive on a single charge of an electric van was achieved by Webfleet back in 2023, managing 500 kilometres in a FIAT e-Scudo. Sustainable explorers Chris Ramsey and Julie Ramsey also broke two world records in their recent North-to-South pole roadtrip in a Nissan Ariya.
