EV battery maker CATL surges in biggest stock listing of 2025

  • Chinese EV battery manufacturer, CATL, went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange this week, quickly becoming the world’s biggest listing in 2025 – highlighting the confidence held in EV-related businesses.
  • Shares have risen at least 12.6%, after trading began on the firm that remains the biggest battery maker in the world, holding a 37% market share over the global EV battery market.
  • This raising of capital is set to come in handy for CATL’s expansion goals – with the firm looking to open more factories overseas, outside of China.

CATL debuts on Hong Kong Stock Exchange

CATL exists as the largest EV battery maker in the world by market share, supplying batteries to major OEMs including Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, and more. This fresh capital gained from CATL’s secondary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, which stands at an additional $4.55 billion, will allow it to further drive its expansion ambitions, which CATL Founder Robin Zeng says goes beyond simply EV batteries and battery storage – with the firm hoping to drive the zero-carbon economy worldwide.

Dr. Robin Zeng, Chairman and CEO of CATL, commented:

“CATL is not just a battery component manufacturer; we are a system solution provider and are committed to becoming a zero-carbon technology company. This listing signifies our deeper integration into the global capital markets and marks a new milestone in our mission to drive the global zero-carbon economy.”

Its overseas expansion has already been seen through its recent agreement with Stellantis to build a €4.1 billion EV battery plant in Spain, set to supply Stellantis with additional EV battery supply from late 2026. The company is also in the process of opening a 100 GWh battery plant in Debrecen, Hungary.

Evidently, it’s not just batteries that CATL is making heavy investments in. The firm has also committed to building 10,000 battery swapping stations for passenger cars across China in collaboration with Sinopec, and is also looking to bring battery swapping technology to heavy goods vehicles such as electric trucks.
