  • Another Chinese EV manufacturer is set to expand sales of its vehicles across Europe, after luxury car marque, Hongqi, previewed two models at this week’s Paris Motor Show.
  • Consisting of the large EH7 electric saloon and the EHS7 electric SUV, these models are being positioned as premium alternatives to EVs from brands such as Audi and Tesla, combining both luxury and high levels of performance.
  • Prices for the saloon and SUV will start at €49,999 (£41,550) and €53,999 (£44,900) respectively. Both will be offered in a single trim level, simplifying the offerings.

A new EV brand for Europe

If you haven’t heard of Hongqi before, it’s the luxury car subbrand of FAW Group – one of China’s big four EV makers, who also operate an EV joint venture with Volkswagen Group, in China. Traditionally in China, it’s carried a highly premium image, and this is something the brand wants to hold true with its European entry. Whilst this debut marks the official confirmation of Hongqi’s further expansion across Europe, it’s been hinted at previously – primarily through Hongqi’s significant footprint at the UK’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, earlier in the summer.

Both cars are specified highly, with the EH7 and EHS7 capable of ranges around 406 miles and 372 miles, respectively. That’s right on par with some of the longest range EVs already available in the region, such as the Volkswagen ID.7 Pro S and Tesla Model 3 Long Range.

Presumably, these retail prices announced by Hongqi at the motor show already account for the EU tariffs, set to be imposed against EVs manufactured within China. For FAW Group specifically, that additional tariff stands at 20.8%. The manufacturer notes that over the next five years, it’ll launch another 10 models for both European and global customers, helping to meet the need for ‘high-quality, intelligent, and eco-friendly vehicles’.
