Xiaomi SU7 Ultra EV revealed, priced near the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S Plaid

  • Xiaomi revealed a fully-fledged performance variant of its electric SU7 saloon today, in the form of the SU7 Ultra.
  • Being first introduced for China, Xiaomi says the SU7 Ultra will offer ‘the ultimate driving experience’ with high levels of motorsport pedigree.
  • The SU7 Ultra is set to be priced at 814,900 CNY in China, putting it at a similar or higher premium than rivals such as the Porsche Taycan, and the Tesla Model S Plaid – which is priced nearly identically.

New hyper EV from Xiaomi revealed

Earlier this week, Xiaomi revealed a prototype example of the SU7 Ultra, which achieved a laptime at the prestigious Nürburgring Nordschleife of just under six minutes and 47 seconds – which it says makes it the fastest four-door saloon to lap the track. Just like the prototype, this now-revealed production model will feature a tri-motor setup, delivering 1,526 horsepower, and a claimed 0-62mph acceleration time of 1.98 seconds.

Xiaomi’s EV division was delivered some other significant kudos earlier this week from an unlikely rival, in the form of Ford CEO Jim Farley. On the Fully Charged Podcast, Farley revealed that he flew out an SU7 model to the U.S. for the last six months as a test and benchmark vehicle, noting that he ‘didn’t want to give it up’.

The SU7 Ultra, which has now gone on sale in China, starts at 814,900 CNY – equivalent to around $114,250. While the SU7 in its most affordable form starts at 215,900 CNY ($30,270), this higher price tag marks a significant shift for Chinese EVs as a whole, which have traditionally been priced lower than similar EVs from European and American brands – whether that’s in their home market, or in overseas markets. With the SU7 Ultra’s pricing, Xiaomi is clearly targeting established electric performance brands like Porsche and Tesla, despite it only revealing its first EV, the SU7, last year. Sales from this specific model could tell whether this hyper EV makes its way to other world markets.
