Volvo ES90 set to be longest range Volvo EV yet

  • The upcoming Volvo ES90 flagship electric saloon, set to be revealed in full on the 5th of March, is set to be the longest range electric car to come from the Swedish manufacturer yet.
  • Ahead of the reveal, Volvo has revealed some details on the ES90 – which includes a WLTP range of up to 435 miles (700km), when the 106kWh battery option is specified.
  • The figure will make the premium EV one of the longest range options available on the market, alongside mile munchers such as the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+.

Volvo reveals more on the ES90 ahead of March reveal

The ES90 will be the first Volvo-branded EV based on a new 800-volt architecture, bringing new highs of efficiency to a Volvo EV. The recently-launched EX90 SUV is also rumoured to make a switch to the more efficient 800-volt setup in the future. This architecture will also allow the ES90 to support a maximum rapid charging speed of 350kW, allowing over 186 miles worth of range to be added in 10 minutes – so long as the public charger in question is also capable of reaching that 350kW speed.

We can expect to find out pricing and more on the ES90 next week, when Volvo reveals the flagship electric saloon in full.

Anders Bell, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Volvo, commented, reiterating the firms commitment to electrification despite the OEM recently abandoning its 2030 EV-only target:

“Our 800V technology marks another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification. It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge your electric Volvo faster and go farther on a single charge.”

It’s not just Volvo hoping to launch one of the longest range electric cars this year. Mercedes-Benz is also poised to release an updated all-electric CLA, which will be capable of travelling over 460 miles between charges. With yet more 400 mile-plus options coming to the market, it’s becoming yet more evident that range anxiety is a thing of the past.
