Volkswagen’s latest Transporter van goes electric

  • Volkswagen has revealed the seventh generation of its Transporter van, which will also be offered in fully electric form.
  • Underneath, as part of the collaboration between Volkswagen and Ford, the new electric Transporter is actually based on Ford’s new E-Transit Custom.
  • The new electric Transporter will coexist with the ID.Buzz, both having specifically different use cases.

New Volkswagen Transporter available in electric form

Three electric drivetrains will be available, with power of either 134hp, 215hp, or 282hp. All vans will take advantage of a 64kWh battery pack, and whilst Volkswagen haven’t published range figures just yet, you can expect a range around the 200 mile mark, according to Ford’s figures from the similar 65kWh pack in the E-Transit Custom. Similarly, there’s no word on pricing, but expect the Transporter to start around £45,000/€50,000. The full specifications should be revealed in September, when the van makes its public debut. The sixth generation Transporter was also briefly available in electric form, but range was just 82 miles.

The electric Transporter will be sold alongside the ID. Buzz. Whilst the latter’s retro styling has made it a hit with private buyers, the Transporter has a maximum payload of up to 1.33 tonnes, compared to just 607kg on the ID. Buzz Cargo. Stowage volume also takes a big boost over the ID. Buzz cargo.
