- Volkswagen has overhauled its electric SUV and SUV coupes models, which are now available to order in the UK.
- These updated EVs use VW’s new APP550 electric motor, which brings both increased torque and increased efficiency to the table.
- Prices for the ID.4 and ID.5 now start at £46,035 and £50,940 respectively, just a few hundred pounds more expensive than the outgoing cars.
The Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 have both been out for a couple of years now, which made it the perfect time for a mid-life facelift. Whilst the outside remains identical, the interior has seen a significant revamp. Out goes the 10-inch touchscreen in favour of a larger 12.9-inch unit, with a new interface, a built-in and improved voice assistant, and separate illuminated sliders for the climate control. Underneath, both models have been changed too. All new specifications come with Volkswagen’s updated APP550 drivetrain, which made its debut on the flagship ID.7 saloon. On entry level models this now delivers 286 PS, and significantly ups the torque figure from the outgoing motor’s 310nm up to 545nm.
On the GTX models, power now comes in at 340 PS. These performance-oriented models also benefit from an updated dynamic chassis control module if fitted, helping to further refine the differences between sport and comfort modes. Volkswagen have not quoted the updated ranges for these models, but you can expect a bump over previous ID.4 and ID.5s as the new APP550 motor also reduces energy consumption on the move. The faster charging capabilities of this new motor also allow up to 110 miles of range to be added in just 10 minutes, thanks to new thermal management that keeps the battery at the optimum temperature for charging. A new colour, Costa Azul blue metallic, is also available as an option on all models apart from the GTX marque.
