Volkswagen Group and OVO have partnered to tackle the rising issue of EV affordability
Volkswagen Group UK has partnered with energy provider OVO to tackle the essential cost barrier holding back EV adoption. From today, July 1, 2024, customers purchasing vehicles from Volkswagen, Audi, CUPRA, SEAT, Škoda, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will benefit from a range of new perks.
Kate Jeffreys, Electric Vehicle Lead for Volkswagen Group UK, stated:
“Following a thorough tender process, we were delighted to join forces with OVO to offer Volkswagen Group customers a solution for clean, affordable and simple energy. On top of our Ohme partnership for home charging, we believe the agreement with OVO breaks down more barriers for customers who are looking to make the switch to an electric vehicle. Buying, owning and driving an electric vehicle is simple and easy – and fun! We hope this latest addition to our holistic offering will be another attractive piece of the jigsaw for consumers.”
A standout feature of this collaboration is OVO’s ‘Charge Anytime’ add-on.
This innovative tool allows EV owners to charge their vehicles at 7p per kWh, regardless of the time of day. Powered by Kaluza’s advanced smart grid technology, the add-on has already helped users save over £10 million since its launch in 2022. It achieves these savings by automatically charging vehicles when both carbon emissions and electricity prices are at their lowest.
Volkswagen Group customers will also receive 10,000 free miles upon signing up with OVO, plus an additional 1,000 free miles annually for the next three years. OVO also offers an ‘Energy Savings Account,’ which allows current diesel and petrol car drivers to bank EV miles for future use.
This partnership complements Volkswagen’s existing home charging and wallbox deal with Ohme, creating a comprehensive support package for EV owners.
OVO’s Chief Commercial Officer, Mat Moakes, commented:
‘’OVO is committed to helping customers transition to an electric vehicle. Together with Volkswagen Group we are rewarding customers for making the switch to an EV. We look forward to extending our market-leading Charge Anytime to more customers than ever before and helping consumers on their EV journey, all while cutting costs and carbon.”
Volkswagen Group’s EV sales have been robust, with over 771,000 electric vehicles sold globally in 2023. This new partnership with OVO is expected to drive those numbers higher by tackling the most major barrier halting adoption. Every step to make EVs more affordable and accessible to the entire population is a bonus, and existing EV drivers will benefit directly from this deal.
