- Shell’s lamppost charging subsidiary ubitricity has reached a major milestone in its UK expansion, after installing its 10,000th public charge point in the country.
- Now accounting for 12% of all public charge points in the UK, this achievement cements ubitricity’s position as the largest charge point operator in the country.
- As more drivers make the switch to EVs, particularly when it comes to those without access to off-street parking, lamppost and on-street charging providers such as ubitricity are set to play a key role in charging confidence.
ubitricity reaches 10,000 chargers in the UK
The 10,000th lamppost charger was installed in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, where ubitricity has an ongoing goal to install 2,000 public charge points across the borough by the end of the year. To mark the achievement, the 10,000th charger was painted in a golden colour, along with a commemorative plaque to mark the significance of the site to its users.
ubitricity is one of a number of CPOs creating public charging that, rather than looking to offer the fastest recharge speeds, is more orienting towards those unable to charge at home, who will need to rely on the public charging network. These lamppost chargers which are typically located on residential streets will be key assets to enable more to make the EV transition – particularly with the ZEV mandate being less than five years away.
Alexander Reinhardt, ubitricity CEO, commented:
“Successfully installing 10,000 charge points in the UK is a huge milestone for ubitricity. The UK EV market has seen rapid growth, and providing convenient and accessible public charging is essential in encouraging even more drivers to make the shift to EV. With more than 10,000 ubitricity public charge points already across the UK, multiple live network expansions and our widespread growth plans, we are proud to support even more EV drivers and local authorities across the UK. It is a very exciting time to be part of ubitricity.”
A Department for Transport spokesperson added:
“We recently announced record discounts to help make EV ownership a reality for thousands more people and put money back in their pockets, with deals set to hit dealerships in the coming weeks.
We’re also making strong progress towards expanding our public charging network across the UK, as shown by ubitricity installing more than 10,000 charge points. With a new public charge point added to the network every half an hour and over 82,000 already available across the UK, we are backing the public and industry to go electric.”
