  • The London Borough of Tower Hamlets has appointed lamppost EV charging specialists ubitricity to install 2,000 public EV charge points across its borough by the end of 2025, in a massive boost for charging infrastructure in the area.
  • The partnership will form the borough’s goal of improving air quality and reducing emissions.
  • Across the UK, Shell subsidiary ubitricity already operates more than 9,200 public charge points.

More lamppost chargers to arrive in London

Under the agreement, ubitricity will install, operate and maintain the lamppost chargers on behalf of the borough, with a target to install 2,000 of these chargers in the area by the end of the year, with the first being installed right now. That may seem an ambitious target, but these chargers can be installed into existing lampposts in just 30 minutes, allowing for such a rapid rollout timeline.

Electric car adoption is rising across the UK, and London and Tower Hamlets is no different – in the first quarter of 2023, over 2,500 plug-in vehicles were registered within the borough, which represented a 121% rise over the previous five-year period. However, with heavily urban areas in London having a lack of off-street parking, public charging solutions such as ubitricity’s will play a key role in making EV ownership more accessible for everyone.

With the number of public EV chargers in the UK now standing at around 81,000, the options available for EV drivers unable to charge up overnight at home are becoming ever wider – and 2025 is set to be a record year for public charger installations, with the current rate of growth standing at the equivalent of one charger every 29 minutes.

Stuart Wilson, UK Managing Director of ubitricity, commented:

“We’re proud to work on this groundbreaking project alongside The London Borough of Tower Hamlets to expand access to EV charging across the community. By taking action to install 2,000 charge points using existing street lights, we’re making it easier for residents to charge right outside their homes – helping to build a more connected and cleaner London.”
