Uber Boat by Thames Clippers is launching the Orbit Clipper in 2025 to transform Thames travel

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers will launch the UK’s first all-electric ferry, Orbit Clipper, in March 2025. The ferry is under construction at Wight Shipyard on the Isle of Wight. Built from lightweight aluminium, it promises a glimpse of a sustainable future for the infamous waterway.

The Orbit Clipper will operate between Canary Wharf and Rotherhithe. It will cross every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends. This service will carry over 20,000 passengers daily. It will take 150 passengers and 100 bicycles in a single trip.

The new ferry replaces a diesel-powered vessel. This change reduces emissions and supports Uber Boat by Thames Clippers’ goal of cutting emissions by 50% by 2035. Running through the heart of the capital, the Thames is in constant use, from large-scale freight ships to small tourist vessels. The beginning of its electrification is a massive boost for London, with real potential to contribute towards its net-zero ambitions.

Sean Collins, co-founder and CEO of Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, commented:

“The Thames is the lifeblood of our great capital and it’s our ambition to continue to push for further progression along the river – we’re calling upon London’s maritime businesses and government bodies to collaborate and ensure a greener future for all.”

The project is a collaboration between Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, Wight Shipyard, and Aqua superPower. It is partly funded by Innovate UK.

With the Mayor of London’s sights set on net-zero by 2030, this is a significant step toward sustainable travel across London
