The US Air Force is embracing electric power with Leidos EV charging solution

  • Leidos gained DIU approval as the exclusive provider for a secure, budget-neutral EV charging solution across DOD installations.
  • The initiative electrifies non-tactical fleet operations, supporting the U.S. government’s sustainability and energy efficiency objectives.
  • Leidos will expand EV charging at Edwards Air Force Base, enabling a scalable model across military branches nationwide.

Leidos receives special success memorandum from the Defense Innovation Unit

Leidos has hit a significant milestone in its Electric Vehicle Charging as a Service (EV CaaS) project. Last week, the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) awarded the company a success memorandum. That certified Leidos as the sole provider for a government-approved, FedRAMP-accredited EV charging solution for the Department of Defense (DOD) and other federal agencies.

The EV CaaS project is exclusive to the Department of the Air Force (DAF). Leidos’ prototype achieved several key goals in under a year. The company rapidly planned, designed, and deployed EV charging facilities and related power infrastructure. These charging stations support non-tactical fleet operations. Sites are already operational at Air Force Plant 42, Dover Air Force Base, and Fairchild Air Force Base.

Vicki Schmanske, president of the Leidos Commercial & International Sector, commented:

“We are honoured to receive this recognition from the Defense Innovation Unit. This achievement underscores our dedication to pioneering sustainable and efficient energy solutions that support the US government’s commitment to a resilient future. We are excited to build on this success and expand our partnership with the DOD to enhance critical infrastructure.”

The DIU’s authorisation allows Leidos to deliver secure, fully furnished EV charging infrastructure on a large scale. In addition, Leidos recently secured an agreement to expand this infrastructure at Edwards Air Force Base, one of the Air Force’s largest installations. This agreement includes a templated model that enables the EV CaaS solution to be quickly implemented.

Leidos is positioning itself as a key player in the EV transition for one of the US’ largest polluters. As the world transitions to sustainability, these services will be invaluable to the ongoing operations of the US military. It may be a while before the aircraft themselves are electric, but that technology is in the works…
