- A report compiled by The EV Universe, which covers all global BEV sales for the first half of 2024, indicates that the Tesla Model Y is continuing to be a best-seller across much of the world.
- The Model Y was not only the most sold in EV in its home territory of the USA, but also across Europe, and in China, beating models from local brands such as BYD to the top of the sales charts.
- With the mid-size electric SUV set for a mid-life refresh, to bring it up to spec with the updated Model 3, Tesla is clearly hoping for the Model Y to remain a best seller for the months and years coming.
Tesla Model Y continues to top the sales charts
The full report, which can be read here, focuses exclusively on fully-electric models, rather than including plug-in hybrid sales, and shows that the Model 3 is also a strong seller, if not on the same level as the Y. In US, for the first six months of the year, the Model Y shifted the most units – 198,030, followed by 73,552 Tesla Model 3s, and 22,234 Ford Mustang Mach-Es. The two best selling EVs across Europe came in the same order: With 102,730 Model Ys sold, 60,403 Model 3s, and a key rival to the Model Y, the Volvo EX30, selling 39,652 units.
Even in China, the Model Y beat any of BYD’s models when it came to first half BEV sales in the country. 210,817 Model Ys were sold, compared to 172,017 of the much-cheaper BYD Seagull city car, and 118,303 of the BYD Yuan Plus, known as the Atto 3 in other markets. Notably however, the Model 3 was missing from China’s top three.
The record figures come as the Model Y has been on the market for over four years, with Tesla rumoured to refresh the Model Y by 2025, bringing it into line with the recently updated Model 3. While Tesla only offers the Model Y in seven-seater form in the US right now, this update could see this more family-oriented spec make its way to both China and Europe, too, to maintain its competitiveness.
It won’t all be plain sailing for the Model Y over the coming months, however. Volvo only begun deliveries of the EX30 this year, and has already hit third place on the European EV sales charts. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers Zeekr and ONVO have also recently revealed alternatives to Tesla’s offering.
