- The best-selling Tesla Model Y has hit an important milestone, picking up where the Nissan Leaf helped kickstart Norway’s mass EV adoption.
- With records beginning from the start of 2011, the Model Y has overtaken the leaf, with a total of 59,775 Tesla Model Ys sold in the country as of September, compared to 58,860 Nissan Leafs.
- Its sibling, the Tesla Model 3, also came in at third place, with 43,910 units sold in the country so far.
The Tesla Model Y breaks another sales record
After already topping EV sales charts around the world, and becoming the best selling car of all drivetrain types in Europe, the Model Y has now topped Norway’s all-time EV sales figures. The registration figures also indicate how much more popular an option the relatively cheaper Model 3 and Model Ys have been, compared to its Model S offering. Just 21,516 Model S EVs have been sold in the country so far, less than half of the total number of Model 3s or Model Ys sold.
The milestone comes soon after the news EVs as a whole in Norway now outnumber the total number of pure petrol cars registered on the country’s roads. For the past two years, the Model Y has also been the best selling overall car in Norway. Last month, the Model Y was the best selling car in the country, with 2,107 units shifted, with the Volvo EX30 and Skoda Enyaq taking 2nd and 3rd place, with sales figures of 932 and 720 respectively. With the end of 2024 getting ever closer, we’ll be watching to see whether Tesla can maintain this sales lead, and make the Model Y the best selling car in Norway for the third year in a row. With the manufacturer also rumoured to bring the US-exclusive seven-seat variant of the Model Y to Europe next year, this could also help boost sales figures throughout 2025.
