Tesla brings back free Supercharging for U.S. Model S buyers

  • Six years after Tesla phased out the free Supercharging for life offer on new Teslas worldwide, the manufacturer is bringing back the scheme in an effort to drive sales – but this time, only for a specific set of buyers.
  • The offer will be brought back on new sales of the Tesla Model S, for U.S. buyers only.
  • Tesla Model S sales have typically lagged behind its smaller and more affordable sibling, the Model 3, which could be the motive behind Tesla bringing in this new incentive for its larger electric saloon.

Tesla Model S given new incentive for U.S. buyers

The offer was confirmed on the Tesla North America X account, with Tesla’s Director of Charging, Max de Zegher, adding: “Model S showed the world electric roadtrips are possible & awesome with Superchargers. It just got even better: hit the open road with free Supercharging.” Unlike previous ‘Free Supercharging for life’ offers, however, the deal will not be transferrable between vehicles or owners. Other exclusions include using the car as a business or rideshare vehicle – something which would make that free charging deal even more attractive.

However, the free charging offer comes alongside a $5,000 price hike of the Model S – with the base model now starting at $79,990, and the Plaid starting at $94,990.

Tesla has already been offering free Supercharging on all new Model Y purchases in Europe, but this has been time limited: With the offer only running on Model Y purchases before the end of 2024, and the free charging lasting for one year. This unlimited charging offer is a notable one for Tesla, though it remains to be seen whether the offer will be rolled out to the Model S in other territories, or to other models offered by Tesla. There’s no word on whether this new offer will be time limited, or a permanent fixture of U.S. Model S sales.
