- Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that the company will invest another $500m exclusively into expansion of its Supercharger network, adding thousands of new charge points.
- The expansion will add to the company’s 50,000-plus Supercharger count, and add to the 6,000-plus Supercharger Sites around the world.
- The news comes after several big moves from Tesla, including the unveiling of all-new models later this year, and the release of the revised Model 3 Performance.
Tesla boosts its Supercharger infrastructure
The expansion of the Supercharger network also comes just weeks after Tesla cut its workforce by 10%, to aid future growth. In a post on X, Musk broke the news, noting that the expansion would create “thousands of new chargers this year”, with the £500m going exclusively to the expansion and construction of brand new sites. Musk did not specify if any countries in particular would receive more from these funds, but its Supercharger network is growing rapidly across the three regions the network focuses on: North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
According to supercharge.info, there were just over 19,000 chargers at the start of 2021. That number now standing at approximately 58,000 represents just how committed Tesla is to the network, and this new amount of cash should go some way to boost that number further. Expansion of existing sites will be necessary with the ongoing consumer switch to EVs, while new sites will further convince consumers to switch to electric models. The impressive growth hasn’t gone unnoticed by other companies, with bp pulse rumoured to purchase Supercharger sites in the US, suggesting that Musk has found more sites ripe for Superchargers.
