From 1st of January 2025, Sweden will introduce new charging regulations for properties and businesses with over 20 parking spaces

Starting on the 1st of January 2025, Sweden is implementing new regulations to facilitate widespread EV adoption. The new rules will require property owners and businesses with over 20 parking spaces to install at least one charge point. These rules expand on legislation from 2021.

Financial support is available to help with these investments. The government’s Klimatklivet program covers up to 50% of the cost for installing charging infrastructure. Property owners and companies planning to upgrade their parking facilities can apply for this support. The next application period runs from the 1st to 8th of November.

Looking ahead, even stricter regulations are coming into place for January 1, 2027. These would require commercial properties to have one charging point for every ten parking spaces. Additionally, charging infrastructure must be extended to at least 50% of the parking spaces, even if not all are equipped with charging points yet.

This incremental increase in infrastructure implementation serves as a valuable blueprint. Lacking infrastructure has become a key barrier to adoption, so ensuring that every public car park is well equipped is key to opening EVs to the widest audience possible.
