Stellantis EVs to be built in US for first time, following $406m investment

  • Stellantis has announced an investment of over $406 million, planned to be used at three of its existing Michigan plants, to help allow for the production of both EVs and hybrid vehicles.
  • $235.5 million of this investment will go into adding BEV production capabilities to its Sterling Heights Assembly Plants, which allow the plant to produce the upcoming Ram 1500 REV electric pickup – making it the first fully-electric car from the Stellantis conglomerate to be produced in the USA.
  • Another $97.6 million has been allocated to its Warren Truck Assembly Plant, which will produce a future fully-electric Jeep Wagoneer model, alongside its ICE-powered cousins.

Another step towards its 2030 electrification goals

The remaining $73 million of investment will go towards the firm’s Dundee Engine Plant, with retooling underway in order to assemble battery trays for its STLA ‘Frame’ platform, as well as front and rear axles for its STLA ‘Large‘ platform. Both architectures are flexible platforms, with applications for both full EVs and ICE models.

The Ram 1500 REV will be the first fully-electric pickup from Stellantis, and is set to launch later this year. It’ll rival other locally-produced electric pickups, such as the GMC HUMMER EV, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Rivian R1T. With a future electric Jeep Wagoneer also set to be built in the US, Stellantis’ EV operations in the states will quickly go from nothing to two specific models. Another three Jeep EVs are expected to be launched globally before the end of next year, though production locations for these have not yet been confirmed.

The retooling of these US factories is part of Stellantis’ 2030 ‘Dare Forward’ strategy, which includes goals of 100% and 50% BEV sales mixes in Europe and the United States, respectively.

Stellantis CEO, Carlos Tavares, commented:

“Sterling Heights Assembly has performed an incredible transformation in record time and I want to thank our colleagues for this great achievement. Gearing up to build our first-ever Ram electric truck and the range-extended version in Michigan is a meaningful moment of pride for our teams. With these investments supporting both Jeep and Ram, we’re adding innovations to our Michigan manufacturing footprint to support a multi-energy approach that is laser-focused on customer demand.”
