Source debuts as a new CPO with Edinburgh’s first ultra-rapid EV charging hub

Source, the joint venture between energy giants SSE plc and TotalEnergies, unveils its first UK ultra-rapid charging hub. Located just two miles from Edinburgh’s city centre, the launch marks the debut of a new Charge Point Operator (CPO) in the UK.

The Ocean Terminal hub boasts 12 ultra-rapid 160 kW chargers and one ChadeMo charger. Source has chosen the location for its high footfall with both locals and tourists.

Source combines the expertise of two powerhouses, SSE and TotalEnergies, to bring a fresh approach to the growing demand for EV infrastructure. Together, they are deploying up to 3,000 high-power charge points across the UK and Ireland over the next five years.

The timing couldn’t be better. The UK’s EV market is expanding rapidly, with 68,255 EVs sold in March alone. A rise in sales always means a rise in charging demand. Right now, the UK’s 2035 emissions goals largely hinge on the availability of suitable infrastructure.

Minister for the Future of Roads, Lilian Greenwood, commented:

“Source is a fantastic initiative with great potential to accelerate the UK’s transition to electric vehicles. This Government has made delivering greener journeys one of its top priorities for transport, and it’s by working together with industry that we’ll be able to boost consumer confidence through widespread, reliable electric vehicle charging – and achieve our shared goal of getting more electric vehicles on the road.”

Local art student, Katie McLuckie, created a fantastic live painting during the opening ceremony this morning. Following the tour, Ade Thomas, Founder of Green.TV Media, hosted a roundtable discussion that dissected the importance of accessibility in charging hubs. The Ocean Terminal hub is a shining example as it hosts four specifically designed accessible bays. On top of this, they’ve ensured the site is well lit and in a busy location, so it’s suitable for nighttime charging. Source will maintain this inclusion throughout its upcoming hubs.

This isn’t just the launch of a new hub, it’s the dawn of a new CPO. Combining SSE and TotalEnergies’ expertise, this CPO has big ambitions, and all the credentials to make it happen.
