TotalEnergies and SSE create Source, promising to deploy 3000 high-power charge points in the UK and Ireland
TotalEnergies and SSE have forged an alliance under the banner of “Source,” to revolutionise EV charging across the UK and Ireland. The joint venture will roll out up to 3,000 high-power charge points over the next five years. The collaboration will be group the charge points into 300 EV hubs in key locations. The hubs, fueled by renewable energy from SSE and TotalEnergies, are poised to capture an impressive 20% market share.
Source is gearing up to support the UK government’s 2035 ZEV mandate. Meanwhile, in Ireland, the venture aligns with targets to introduce nearly 1 million EVs by 2030.
TotalEnergies boasts a global footprint of 64,000 charge points and management of London’s Source network. SSE has already launched Scotland’s most powerful EV hub and is set to debut its first Irish hub soon.
Neil Kirkby, Managing Director of Enterprise at SSE, explained:
“SSE is already playing a leading role in decarbonising the UK and Ireland’s power system including building the world’s largest offshore wind farm and transforming electricity networks. Now this agreement will help accelerate progress towards a decarbonised transport system too, ensuring the vehicles that keep the economy moving can do so in a more sustainable and efficient way.”
Government support underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in driving widespread adoption of EVs.
Minister for the Future of Roads, Lilian Greenwood, commented on the partnership:
“Source is a fantastic initiative with great potential to accelerate the UK’s transition to electric vehicles. This Government has made delivering greener journeys one of its top priorities for transport, and it’s by working together with industry that we’ll be able to boost consumer confidence through widespread, reliable electric vehicle charging – and achieve our shared goal of getting more electric vehicles on the road.”
Source marks a pivotal moment in the UK and Ireland’s emobility journey. The very recent EV SUMMIT underlined the importance of extensive infrastructure to give drivers the confidence to make the switch to EV. In doing so, we are actively encouraging the next wave of adopters. Source promises to boost the UK and Ireland’s network, therefore, boosting the confidence of drivers across the countries.
