Smart Charge is celebrating one year of providing ultra-rapid EV charging solutions across the UK. Over the past year, it’s has established 55 hubs and 447 charging bays. The charge point operator (CPO) has grown so fast thanks to its Sainsbury’s integration, as the UK supermarket chain pivots to provide charging while you shop.
In June 2024, Smart Charge marked its 50th ultra-rapid charging hub in Enfield. This brought the total number of bays to over 400 nationwide. Additionally, they introduced a unique feature: earning Nectar points while charging. This makes Smart Charge the first EV charging service in the UK to integrate a national loyalty scheme. These supermarket loyalty points make an appealing benefit for any EV driver.
The CPO recently celebrated the launch of a new hub at Sainsbury’s Nine Elms. This hub added eight ultra-rapid charging bays to the tally. With 55 locations across the UK, Smart Charge continues to expand.
On launch, Smart Charge’s ambitious plan was to expand to over 750 charging bays in 2024. That would position them among the top EV charging providers in the UK. Now, that goal seems well within reach by the end of the year.
Smart Charge is the new kid on the UK’s charging block, and it’s come in at a blistering pace. With the enormous benefit of enjoying ‘free’ and pre-approved Sainsbury’s locations, half the battle is won. That has opened the door to rapid growth, which is making EV ownership far more feasible for drivers across the country.
