Rimac Nevera R electric hypercar hopes to break world records

  • Croatian electric supercar manufacturer, Rimac, has revealed an even faster take on its Nevera EV: The Nevera R.
  • Whilst the original Nevera was designed as a performance car that was still usable enough to be a daily driver and long-distance machine, the R is a more hardcore, track-focussed version.
  • With an increase in peak horsepower from 1,914hp on the standard Nevera to 2,107hp on the Nevera R, Rimac is quoting some record-breaking acceleration speeds for its new model.

Rimac’s fastest EV yet

While the Nevera R has the same 256 mph top speed as its predecessor, acceleration times are where the most serious gains can be seen. 0-60 mph takes just 1.74 seconds, 0-124mph in 4.38 seconds, and perhaps most impressively: 0-186 mph in 8.66 seconds.

A more aggressive set of aerodynamic parts, along with suspension tweaks, and new grippier tyres, have made the Nevera R even faster around circuits than the standard Nevera. Rimac has yet to put the R through its paces on the Nurburgring circuit, but the standard car already holds the fastest time on the track for a road-legal EV.

Just 40 examples of the Nevera R will be produced, and is expected to start at a whopping £2.3m. While that’s out of the reach for the vast majority of people, Rimac’s new EV serves as an example of just how capable an electric powertrain can be – and could convince more keen drivers to pick an electric sports car as their next vehicle. On the other end of the scale, MG’s new Cyberster sports car starts at just £54,995.

Mate Rimac, Founder and CEO of Rimac Group, commented on the debut:

“When we developed the Nevera, an important part of the brief was that it should be a Grand Tourer. We made sure it was spacious, comfortable and finely balanced between thrilling and accessible. Ultimately what we achieved struck that balance perfectly; a high-performance record-breaking car that could set new benchmarks at the Nürburgring Nordschleife and be driven comfortably thousands of miles across continents. It was a watershed moment in automotive performance; the world’s first production all-electric hypercar, single-handedly leading a new generation. But we’re relentlessly tweaking to customers’ desires, and many were looking for a car that really emphasized the Nevera’s cornering ability, using all the advanced technology on-board. We responded with the Nevera R: all the DNA of the record-breaking Nevera, but lighter, faster and more focused.”
