Polestar Energy launches in UK, hoping to lower home EV charging costs further

  • All-electric performance car brand, Polestar, has launched its Polestar Energy app in the UK, following a successful pilot scheme previously ran in the country.
  • Much like smart charging apps provided to customers by other electric OEMs, the aim is to make home charging both cheaper and more sustainable – making the Polestar brand a more attractive product against its rivals.
  • Polestar claims the app could save customers up to 70% on their home charging compared to the UK energy cap rates.

Polestar Energy launches in UK, with more territories coming soon

The app will allow Polestar drivers to enter what level they want to charge the car to, and when they’ll need to drive it – with the app working out the rest, prioritising charging during periods of low demand – when energy is cheaper and renewables are typically lower in demand also. Combined with an Octopus Go energy tariff, Polestar says this could bring off-peak charging prices down to only 7p per kWh. For context, the current domestic energy price cap per kWh in the UK currently sits at 24.86 pence.

With Polestar introducing bi-directional charging later this year, starting with the new Polestar 3, this incoming tech will also play a part in the Polestar Energy program, helping drivers send energy back into the grid from their cars to reduce costs further.

Polestar is leaning heavily into this app reducing the total cost of ownership of a Polestar EV, so we can expect this to start being communicated to customers – as the industry pushes hard this year on demonstrating why electric vehicles are better than their ICE forebears.

Michael Lohscheller, Polestar’s CEO, commented on the app’s launch:

“As the only global premium EV brand it’s important that we offer our customers such a compelling charging offer to make using their cars easier and more cost-effective. Up to 70% reduction on charging costs at home versus cap rates can make a big difference, and so we’re rolling this offer out at scale, with more markets to come later this year. When we add vehicle-to-grid capabilities in Polestar’s line-up it will add even more value to our customers.”
