Polestar begins Plug & Charge support, helping simplify public charging

  • Polestar has begun the rollout of Plug & Charge tech across its EV range, with the new Polestar 3 being the first model to benefit from the feature.
  • With the new feature, drivers will simply be able to plug in at supported chargers and immediately commence charging, with no need to tap their card, or open any app – with the payment and authentication automatically handled through the car’s system.
  • The feature is already compatible with 9,500 high-power public chargepoints.

Polestar’s plan to make EV charging even easier

Polestar 3 owners will need to enable the setting in the car’s infotainment, before then connecting this to the Polestar Charge app, which already gives drivers access to 700,000 individual chargepoints, across Europe. Plug & Charge will work with any CPO that currently supports the protocol – that means select chargers from operators like Ionity, Mer, and Allego, will be compatible. While this means that only some chargepoints will benefit from the convenient feature, this number should increase over the coming years, particularly considering the technology’s free-to-use protocol.

A wider rollout of this feature, amongst both OEMs and CPOs, could help encourage the early mainstream of EV adoption, helping promote EV charging as a process that’ll be even easier than filling up a car with fossil fuels. Whilst it’s only the Polestar 3 benefitting from the feature so far, other Polestar EVs, like the 4, are set to gain access to the feature in 2025 – again, highlighting the benefits of having an EV that can features such as this added over a simple over-the-air update.
