- Nissan has launched a new charging app for its U.S. EV customers, bringing together over 90,000 fast chargers across the U.S. under a single unified app, which it’s calling the NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network.
- The network will be available for U.S. owners of the Nissan Ariya EV, along with future Nissan EVs destined for the states.
- The 90,000-plus fast charge points will come from a number of participating existing charging networks, including Shell Recharge, ChargePoint, EVgo, and Electrify America.
Nissan launches NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network for its U.S. Ariya drivers
With the new network, after registering a payment method, users of this charge network will simply be able to drive up to a compatible charge point, and press a button on the screen to commence charging – with no requirement to have a physical payment method on their person. Through the existing myNISSAN app, this will locate all nearby chargers under the network, and display availability of said chargers. The service is expected to be available to U.S. customers from November.
Nissan plans to expand this 90,000-plus number in the future, noting that it has ‘plans to incorporate additional networks in the future’. It’s not the only OEM to create its own-brand charging network. Across the pond in Europe, many manufacturers are also simplifying the public charging process – with brands such as Audi and BMW also operating charging services that bring together chargers from multiple CPOs, under one program.
All Nissan Ariyas sold in the U.S. and Canada set to come with a native North American Charging Standard (NACS) port from later this year, and all future Nissan EVs are also set to adopt the standard, which will give them adapter-less access to Tesla’s vast Supercharger network. With these steps, the manufacturer is clearly hoping to make charging a more seamless experience for its customers, helping to drive EV adoption.
