- Electric vehicle ridesharing and charging specialists, Revel, will provide an expansion in New York JFK airport’s EV charging facilities, with the installation of 24 EV fast chargers at the major transit hub.
- The new chargers are set to go online in early 2025, bringing the total number of EV fast chargers available at JFK up to 46.
- These chargers will be installed for use by both for-hire vehicles and public vehicles, with Revel saying that the site will be ‘one of the most used fast charging stations in the country’.
JFK to encourage EV usage with new charger installations
The move will help enable the Port Authority, which manages JFK airport, to achieve its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 – with electric vehicles playing a significant role within that. The move marks the second partnership between Revel and the Port Authority, with the two also planning to install 48 fast chargers at New York’s third-busiest airport, LaGuardia.
With these new chargers at JFK also open to ride-sharing EVs, this installation also supports New York City’s ‘Green Rides Initiative’ – which requires all rideshare trips to be performed in either a zero-emission or wheelchair accessible vehicle by 2030.
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Executive Director, Rick Cotton, commented:
“The electric chargers currently at JFK are heavily used, and we are delighted to respond to this strong demand for charging equipment so that the airport can accommodate even more electric vehicles. This partnership with Revel is another major step in the Port Authority’s commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, while supporting the transportation ecosystem around us to reach the same goal.”
Frank Reig, Co-Founder and CEO of Revel, added:
“It’s impossible to electrify rideshare without an abundance of charging near the airports. In partnering with the Port Authority at JFK, Revel has now cemented plans for the largest public fast charging stations at both of New York’s home turf airports. Revel’s JFK site will be one of the most used fast charging stations in the country, and with the Port Authority’s support, we’re on track to open it in a matter of months.”
New York City has already seen an impressive growth across its charging infrastructure across the past few years. Beyond this significant JFK installation, local parking firm Icon Parking is also set to bring another 5,000 chargers to the city.
