  • The MINI performance subbrand, John Cooper Works (JCW), is beginning its switch to electrification, after the reveal of two performance-oriented electric cars at this week’s Paris Motor Show.
  • Traditionally the reserve of only the fastest MINI models, that rings true with these first EVs from the subbrand – with both packing a serious punch from their electric motors.
  • This includes the all-electric MINI Cooper John Cooper Works, which will exist as a rival to EV hot hatches such as the Alpine A290 and Cupra Born.

MINI debuts two new options at the Paris Motor Show

The two performance models presented for the first time are the John Cooper Works Electric hatch, and the John Cooper Works Aceman crossover. Both are already available as full EVs in standard form, but these mark the first electric cars from MINI to carry the full JCW badge.

The John Cooper Works Electric is the classic fast MINI format, and a prototype was teased earlier in the year before this full reveal. This model will deliver 258 horsepower through a front-driven electric motor, allowing for a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds. Despite that performance on offer, it’ll still offer a predicted range of around 230 miles. A ‘boost’ button on the steering wheel delivers an additional 26 horsepower for brief periods of extra power, in a similar fashion to the Alpine A290 – which will likely be a key competitor for this car. Other rivals include the Cupra Born, Volkswagen ID.3 GTX, and MG4 XPOWER. So far, the electric hot hatch market remains pretty niche.

The second JCW revealed was the John Cooper Works Aceman. This carries the same 258 horsepower electric motor setup as the hatch, but with bags more practicality thanks to its crossover shape. This will be a rival for a number of faster small EVs, such as performance variants of EVs like the Volvo EX30.

Both models will have a key role in putting the fun into EV, picking up where previous ICE-powered John Cooper Works models left.

Stefan Richmann, Head of MINI, commented on the reveal:

“With the new all-electric MINI John Cooper Works models, we are bringing the legendary performance and driving dynamics of MINI into a completely new era. We are combining the tradition and character of the MINI brand with the latest technology to create a unique driving experience that will thrill our customers”.
