New Shell EV charging hub near Luton Airport offers rapid power for travellers

Shell has unveiled a new ultra-rapid EV charging hub just minutes from London Luton Airport.

Located on Eaton Green Road (LU2 9HD), the Shell Recharge site features six 150kW chargers capable of powering most EVs from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes. While drivers wait, they can enjoy a Co-op shop, Costa Express coffee, hot food, free Wi-Fi, toilets, Amazon Lockers, and a car wash.

This hub is strategically positioned to serve both local EV drivers and the 16.7 million passengers who passed through Luton Airport in 2024. With over 7,300 parking spaces nearby, it offers a convenient charging option for travellers and airport staff alike.

Shell’s latest opening reflects its rapid shift to electrification. The company now operates over 100,000 DC fast chargers globally, including ultra-rapid 150kW and 175kW models. This network is part of a larger infrastructure of 750,000 charge points available through Shell and its partners. Shell aims to install 100,000 public EV charge points across the UK by 2030, with 11,000 planned as rapid chargers.

Destination charging means to offer EV charging at locations where people naturally stop, like airports, supermarkets, and shopping centres. It’s becoming increasingly important in the world’s push to net zero. Strategic placement allows drivers to top up their batteries while going about their daily activities, reducing range anxiety and making EV ownership more convenient.

As the UK continues to embrace electric mobility, initiatives like Shell’s new hub near Luton Airport play a crucial role in building the necessary infrastructure to support this transition.
