Kempower drives electric bus fleets in Austria with charging partnership
Kempower is at the forefront of Austria’s shift to emission-free public transport. The company is powering the electrification of NIGGBUS, a major transport operator in the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley. By 2025, Kempower will support a fleet of ten fully electric buses, cutting 680 tons of CO₂ annually.
Kempower’s fast-charging solutions are central to the project’s success. Each bus fully recharges in under three hours. The system showcases user-friendly features like QR codes for real-time monitoring.
Philipp Oppolzer, Kempower’s Regional Business Development Director, commented:
“We are delighted to be working with NIGGBUS and vlotte vkw to drive forward the electrification of local public transport in Vorarlberg and thus make a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions in the region. Our fast-charging solutions are designed to ensure the availability of the e-bus fleet at all times and to meet the demanding requirements of daily operations. With this installation, we are sending a strong signal for the future of emission-free transportation.”
The infrastructure includes ten Kempower Satellites delivering 160 kW each and two Power Units with a total output of 800 kW. A dedicated transformer converts medium voltage into the 800 volts needed for charging. This cutting-edge system guarantees reliability and efficiency for the growing fleet.
NIGGBUS Managing Director, Gerhard Pertoll, celebrated the partnership:
“The integration of Kempower technology enables us to precisely control the charging processes and ensure that our fleet is always ready for use. With a range of 300 kilometres per charge, the new e-buses are ideal for urban and regional transport. Every new investment we make reinforces our commitment to environmentally friendly, sustainable local transport.”
Kempower has been rapidly expanding its heavy charging infrastructure across Europe. Its recent Proviridis partnership pioneered underground truck charging just weeks ago. Now, with the vital electric bus sector in its sights, it’s becoming one of the most important charging players on the continent.
