IONNA: The rise of the new US EV charging giant

  • IONNA is rapidly expanding the US EV charging network, aiming for 30,000 fast-charging bays by 2030, with 1,000 launching by 2025, despite NEVI funding uncertainty.
  • Backed by major automakers, IONNA is securing 100+ sites, partnering with Sheetz, and introducing Plug&Charge for seamless payments.
  • With AI-powered stores, smart reservations, and private investment, IONNA is revolutionising US EV charging—independent of federal funding.

How IONNA is making waves and disrupting the US EV charging scene

The US EV charging network is in dire need of expansion, but policy uncertainty and funding challenges are slowing progress. While government-backed programs like the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) initiative promised 500,000 new chargers, political shifts have cast doubt over future support.

Yet, IONNA isn’t waiting around. This automaker-backed charging network is moving full speed ahead, pushing to build 30,000 fast-charging bays by 2030, with 1,000 set to go live by the end of 2025. Unlike other networks, IONNA is not dependent on federal funding, making it one of the most agile and resilient players in US EV charging today.

IONNA expands while federal support wavers

President Trump’s recent Unleashing American Energy executive order has raised concerns over NEVI funding. While $3 billion has already been allocated, future government support for EV infrastructure is now uncertain. Some charging networks might pause expansion, waiting for clarity. But IONNA is charging ahead—on its own terms.

Founded by BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, IONNA has secured 100+ site contracts across the US. New Rechargeries have already opened in North Carolina, Texas, Kansas, and Arizona, with many more under construction.

By partnering with Sheetz, IONNA is integrating fast chargers into 50+ convenience store locations by 2026, ensuring easy access to EV charging where drivers already stop.

IONNA’s smart tech is transforming US EV charging

IONNA’s expansion is dependent on cutting-edge tech. Through a strategic partnership with Hubject, IONNA is rolling out Plug&Charge technology, which eliminates the need for apps or payment cards—just plug in and go.

Some locations will also feature Amazon’s AI-powered “Just Walk Out” stores, where drivers can grab essentials without waiting in line. With smart reservations, in-car payments, and AI-powered route planning in development, IONNA is building the future of US EV charging today.

Charging ahead, no matter what

While policy changes create uncertainty for many EV charging projects, IONNA remains unstoppable. With private investment, cutting-edge technology, and major automaker backing, the company is delivering charging solutions now—without waiting on Washington.

For EV drivers, that means more chargers, smarter technology, and a better experience on the road. The US EV future is still being written—but IONNA is making sure it moves forward.
