- Hyundai has added a flagship electric SUV to its IONIQ lineup, with the reveal of the IONIQ 9 – both the largest EV and largest car ever released by the manufacturer.
- This seven-seat EV is based on the same E-GMP platform as Kia’s seven-seat EV9, and will rival other large premium electric SUVs such as the Volvo EX90 and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.
- The reveal took place in Los Angeles, and is destined as a global model – initially going on sale in South Korea and the United States in 2025, before debuting in Europe and other markets at a later date.
Meet the Hyundai IONIQ 9
With a premium angled interior and exterior, and loaded with standard equipment, Hyundai is clearly aiming this EV at premium and luxury buyers – an area where, notably, the Range Rover Electric is yet to come onto the market. The IONIQ 9 will be offered with a sizeable 110.3kWh battery, enough to allow it to achieve an estimated range of 385 miles (620 kilometres), while charging speeds of up to 350kW will be supported. Two drivetrain options will be available, the most affordable being the Long Range RWD model, followed by the Performance AWD model – with the latter offering an impressive 0-60mph time of 4.9 seconds.
There’s no official word on pricing just yet, but Hyundai and Kia’s EV counterparts tend to be priced very similarly. Therefore, we can expect the IONIQ 9 to start at a similar figure to the seven-seat Kia EV9‘s £64,995 / $54,900 starting price.
Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, commented:
“IONIQ 9 embodies Hyundai Motor’s unwavering commitment and confidence in electrification. Based on Hyundai Motor Group’s acclaimed Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), IONIQ 9 offers outstanding interior space, providing customers with unique value while solidifying our leadership in the global EV market.”
