Hyundai and LG complete an advanced EV battery plant in Indonesia, boosting local production goals

  • Hyundai and LG completed the HLI Green Power EV battery plant in Indonesia with a 10 gigawatt-hour annual capacity.
  • Hyundai’s Indonesian plant will start mass production of the KONA Electric EV, leveraging the new facility’s batteries.
  • The HLI Green Power plant aids Indonesia’s goal to produce 600,000 EVs by 2030, moving towards carbon neutrality.

Hyundai and LG Energy Solution have completed a landmark EV battery plant in Indonesia, set to accelerate Kona Electric production

Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution Ltd. have completed a state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Indonesia. The facility, known as Hyundai LG Indonesia Green Power (HLI Green Power), is located in Karawang New Industry City, East Jakarta.

The HLI Green Power facility spans 320,000 square meters and houses advanced electrode processing, assembly, and activation facilities. Thanks to its scale, it boasts an annual production capacity of 10 gigawatt-hours, sufficient to power over 150,000 EVs. Therefore, Hyundai and Kia models worldwide will use the battery cells produced in this plant.

Hyundai’s Indonesian plant will begin mass production of the KONA Electric this month, utilising battery cells produced at HLI Green Power. So, the development establishes a fully-integrated EV production system for Hyundai in Indonesia. Looking ahead, the streamlined supply chain will give the manufacturer a competitive edge in the Southeast Asian EV market.

HLI Green Power began operations in the second quarter of this year.

Indonesia has set ambitious goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, including a target to produce 600,000 EVs by 2030. The HLI Green Power plant is a significant step toward realising these goals.

The Kona Electric is the second model to be produced at Hyundai’s Indonesian plant, following the Ioniq 5. Its newly localised production means the Kona Electric is expected to play a crucial role in driving growth in Indonesia’s EV market.

These mega EV facilities are making waves the world over. A major battery production facility got underway in Mississippi, and Greenpower Park calling for more support from the UK government in the last week alone. Manufacturers are rapidly pulling together the localised supply chains that will inject new energy into the EV market as we speak.
