Hawai‘i opens second NEVI-funded EV charging station at Aloha Tower

  • Hawai‘i opens its second NEVI-funded EV charging station, supporting zero-emission transportation at O‘ahu’s Aloha Tower.
  • The station offers four 150-kW chargers; rates are $0.44/kWh daytime and $0.57/kWh overnight.
  • With HDOT and federal support, Hawai‘i advances EV infrastructure, promoting accessible and affordable charging statewide.

Hawai‘i makes waves in the EV transition as it opens its second NEVI-funded EV charging station

Hawai‘i has just celebrated the opening of its second NEVI-funded electric vehicle (EV) charging station. Located at Aloha Tower Marketplace on O‘ahu, this $3.5 million project aims to support the state’s shift toward zero-emission transportation.

The station features four 150-kilowatt DC fast chargers, each equipped with CCS and CHAdeMO connectors. Soon, North American Charging Standard (NACS) connectors will also be available. For now, EVs needing NACS will need an adapter.

Federal Highway Administration Acting Administrator, Kristin White, commented:

“Hawai‘i is showing what true leadership looks like by implementing a strong electric vehicle infrastructure program to help Hawai‘i residents support sustainable transportation and reach our climate goals. The Federal Highway Administration is proud to partner with the Aloha State and other states to make it more convenient for Americans to reliably and affordably charge their cars and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

This station will be open 24 hours a day. Charging rates are set at $0.44 per kWh from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and $0.57 per kWh from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m., reflecting lower daytime energy costs due to solar generation. To improve availability, a $0.50-per-minute idle fee will start five minutes after an EV reaches a full charge.

Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Director, Ed Sniffen, celebrated the achievement:

“The NEVI program has been huge in accelerating our transition toward a sustainable transportation future. Hawai‘i has long been a leader in EV adoption and HDOT will continue to push ahead on building the infrastructure needed to keep that momentum going. We’d like to thank our contractors, Sustainability Partners LLC, Hensel Phelps, Wasa Electrical Services Inc., Hawaiian Electric along with the U.S. Department of Transportation and our Hawai‘i Congressional Delegation for their partnership in delivering our NEVI program.”

With HDOT’s continued push, the state is making EV charging reliable, affordable, and widely accessible for all. We’ll follow the infrastructural upgrades as the islands develop their charging abilities.
